Risk Factors for Heart Disease

If CAD goes undetected or untreated, there is the potential for more serious complications to occur, such as a heart attack. Fortunately, there are some risk factors that alert your doctor that you may be at risk for heart disease14:

  • Family history of heart disease
  • Being overweight
  • Lack of exercise
  • Smoking
  • Poor diet and excessive intake of alcohol
  • Diabetes*
  • Presence of certain conditions
    (ie, high blood pressure [hypertension],
    high cholesterol [hypercholesterolemia])
  • Postmenopausal status in women
  • Increasing age

These are some of the risk factors that may assist your doctor in determining your likelihood of having or developing CAD. Unfortunately, they may not provide a complete and accurate answer. Your doctor may want additional information before deciding how to treat you.

*The indications for Cardiolite® are not specific to patients with diabetes. Cardiolite® was shown to be an effective prognostic tool in the evaluation of patients with known or suspected CAD. This was determined in 3 pivotal trials enrolling 1596 patients, including 311 patients with diabetes, which were used as the basis for approval.
